The U.S. Department of Transportation’s (DOT) hazardous materials regulations (49 CFR 171-180 specifies requirements for the safe transportation of hazardous materials, often referred to as hazmat, in commerce by rail, aircraft, vessel, and motor vehicle.

The DOT incorporates Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) hazardous wastes as one of the types of hazmat that must be transported according to DOT specifications.

Generators of hazardous waste and treatment, storage, and disposal facilities may, therefore, be subject to DOT’s hazmat transportation regulations.

Key Points:

  • DOT’s hazmat regulations require shippers and transporters to ensure the safety of shipments.
  • Shipments must be properly packaged and accompanied by required documentation.
  • You must be prepared for emergencies and take effective security measures.
  • And finally, all hazmat employees must be properly trained to perform their jobs competently and safely.
